(Yicai Global) March 7 -- Sichuan Troy Information Technology Co. which provides data network services, has set up a laboratory with experts from the United States and China as it looks to develop 5G technology and artificial intelligence.

The firm penned a deal with Liang Ping and his team of researchers from America's National Academy of Investors and the Shanghai Academy of Xi'an Jiaotong University, it said in a statement. The lab will be used to develop smart antenna and millimeter-wave communication technology for autonomous driving, 5G base stations and smart urban monitoring systems.

The agreement comes as China looks to roll out 5G technology nationwide. Key segments in the sector will enter a phase of pre-commercialization by the end of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said last month. The nation hopes to roll out large-scale testing and full commercialization by 2020.

Liang, who was elected as an academician for the NAI in 2013, will also serve as Troy's chief scientist for a five-year term. He once served as director of the Center for Robotic Systems in Microelectronics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and set up chip maker TransDimension Inc. in 1997.
