(Yicai Global) March 6 -- Tsinghua University and artificial intelligence firm Beijing Babel Technology Co. have created offline interpretation software to translate Chinese in Japanese and English through speech recognition.

The software combines multimodal biometric technology and natural language processing developed by Tsinghua's Center for Speech and Language Technology, the Global Times reported. The application allows accurate, real-time translation without the need for an internet connection.

"As AI translators need to compute a lot of data, users have a better experience online," an official from the CSLT said. "However, differences in network infrastructure around the world mean interpretation software needs to operate offline to become available in a broader range of scenarios."

The new translators have gone through repeated tests and will soon be applied to Babel's Alcorrect Translator to enable voice translation between Chinese and the two foreign languages, said Zhang Ming, chief technology officer at Babel.

Alcorrect Transator is the company's main product and translates many languages. It is one of China's most popular digital interpreters and Babel hopes the offline voice recognition technology will make it even more competitive.
