(Yicai Global) March 5 -- Uniqlo is not planning to lower its prices outside Japan, the clothing retailer's Chinese arm said today.

The price adjustment in Japan is in line with the government's policies, the Paper reported today, citing Uniqlo China.

Uniqlo and GU stores across Japan will reduce their prices by about 9 percent as many individuals, families, and businesses are facing unprecedented difficulties amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the brands' parent Fast Retailing announced yesterday.

Many Chinese consumers posted on Weibo and WeChat that they were expecting the Japanese company to expand its discounts to the Chinese market, especially because people suspected the brand to have quietly raised its prices in China. It is hard to find any clothes priced below CNY200 (USD30.90) in the stores, some lamented.

However, Uniqlo China yesterday denied the price hikes. Uniqlo's prices have been stable for many years, and it even cut the prices of some products, such as flannel shirts and wrinkle-free shirts, it said.

The Covid-19 pandemic has done little to curb Uniqlo's expansion in China. The chain has built 66 new stores in 2020, helping it achieve 800 stores in the country, local media reported earlier. Uniqlo outlets cover 183 cities across China, according to its website.
