(Yicai Global) July 31 -- Representatives from the United States arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday for the first round of trade talks with China since May.

The meeting is aimed at implementing the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries on the sidelines of last month's G20 summit in Japan.

The Chinese delegation, headed by Vice Premier Liu He, hosted the U.S. delegation led by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, at the Fairmont Peace Hotel on the city's riverside Bund on Tuesday.

At the hotel, the chief representatives between the two sides posed for a photo on the terrace where they enjoyed the view of the Huangpu River.

Shanghai was where the China-U.S. joint communique was signed in 1972. And the 90-year-old hotel has also witnessed several important moments in bilateral exchanges between the two countries.

Former U.S. presidents including George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have visited and, in 1971, the U.S. table tennis players involved in "Ping Pong Diplomacy" stayed as guests.
