(Yicai Global) Feb. 26 -- Chinese smartphone maker Vivo Communication Technology Co. unveiled a full-screen concept handset at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today. Users can unlock their phones by touching anywhere on the lower half of the phone's screen.

The Apex concept phone that Vivo introduced follows its latest product X20 Plus In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology but the latter's unlock area is limited to a thumbnail-sized icon, while the new phone expands it for greater user convenience to cover the entire bottom half of the screen, tech media outlet PingWest reported.

Also, to achieve a true full screen, Apex is designed with a retractable front camera that rises from the top when activated and retracts after use, thereby avoiding the iPhone X's Notch design that affects screen integrity. The new smartphone also incorporates a new speaker working principle that gives off sounds via screen vibrations.

Apex is currently purely conceptual and Vivo has no plans to release actual products, it said. Founded in 2009, Vivo produced its first smartphone in 2011. Last year, the brand sold 69 million handsets in China, behind only Huawei Technologies Co. and OPPO.
