Volkswagen Embeds Chinese NEV Battery Maker Into Its Global Supply Chain Volkswagen Embeds Chinese NEV Battery Maker Into Its Global Supply Chain

(Yicai Global) March 7 -- Germany's Volkswagen AG has now integrated Chinese new energy battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) into its global supply chain.

The latter's batteries will be used in Volkswagen's latest MEB electric vehicle platform. International giants LG Electronics Inc., Panasonic Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. also joined in the bidding for the MEB project, state media thePaper.cn reported yesterday. CATL won out in the end, thus becoming the only battery company in China to receive a global supply contract for the project.

MEB is a modular technology platform customized by Volkswagen for pure electric vehicles. It has very strong expandability and can fashion various models with different wheelbases and mileages. The platform will give birth to such future models as compact SUVs, medium SUVs and mid-sized cars, per plan.

The MEB platform will unroll in China in 2020, eight models based on the platform will be locally produced between then and 2022, and three imported models will also debut, said Stephan Woellenstein, chief executive of China Volkswagen. Founded in 2011, CATL is seeking an A-share listing in China. Its market value is expected to reach CNY130 billion (USD21 billion) post-listing, per its prospectus issued in November.
