World to Have 1.5 Million 5G Base Stations by Year-End, Huawei Predicts World to Have 1.5 Million 5G Base Stations by Year-End, Huawei Predicts

(Yicai Global) July 30 -- The number of worldwide fifth-generation mobile network base stations was over 700,000 as of this month, and will top 1.5 million by the year’s end, said Guo Ping, rotating chairman of Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies.

The 5G sector should focus on developing applications, he added, speaking at an online business summit yesterday.

The ranks of global 5G network users have now surpassed 90 million, and 81 telecoms operators had deployed these networks for commercial use by last month in nations and regions that contribute about 72 percent to the world’s gross domestic product, including Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

“The first phase of global deployment of 5G networks has ended and the focus of the next stage is developing 5G applications and unleashing corresponding benefits,” Guo explained, adding “Unifying the sector’s standards is the very first step in achieving authentic commercial success of 5G networks.”

“The ‘5G for business’ part is key to telecom operators securing opportunities for new growth,” noted Ryan Ding, the Shenzhen-based company’s executive director and chief executive of its Carrier Business Group. "For instance, the world has nearly 50 types of commercialized 5G industrial modules to support the large-scale application of 5G technologies in various sectors,” he noted, continuing, “The ‘5G for business’ model is ready to further boom.”

“Over 15 telecoms operators have commercialized the business of 5G special lines,” Ding added. “Operators should focus on coal mines, iron and steel, ports, oil fields and other sectors to develop their 5G-themed ‘to-business’ by analyzing from three the aspects of sectors’ attractiveness and both commercial and technological feasibility,” he also advised.

Unifying the industry’s standards is the premise of extensively developing ‘to-business’ 5G, according to Huawei. The telecommunications and electricity sectors have now partially linked to each other, while mines, iron and steel have collaboratively set up an ecological alliance to jointly formulate standards.
