(Yicai Global) Jan. 31 -- Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi’s global vice president who led the Chinese smartphone giant’s expansion into the Indian market, has left the firm for personal reasons.

Jain, who joined Xiaomi in June 2014 to take charge of its business in India, is ‘taking some time off,’ he said on Twitter yesterday. Beijing-based Xiaomi has confirmed the news.

Jain, who co-founded Indian e-commerce firm Jabong in 2012, rose to the ranks of vice president at the smartphone maker in February 2017, taking over from Hugo Barra. He stepped down as head of Xiaomi India in June last year and was replaced by Alvin Tse, Bloomberg reported at the time.

In January 2022, Xiaomi was fined INR6.5 billion (USD79 million) by Indian authorities for tax evasion. It followed raids on Xiaomi’s offices and contract manufacturers by tax officials. Reuters reported at the time that Jain and Xiaomi India’s Chief Financial Officer Sameer BS Rao were intimated by the Directorate of Enforcement over the matter.

Xiaomi’s share price [HKG:1810] closed up 1.7 percent at HKD12.92 (USD1.65) today.
