(Yicai) Aug. 7 -- The 10th-anniversary concert of Chinese boy band TFBoys is expected to have fattened the bank account of video platform Youku, which had the exclusive rights to stream the event, and energized the tourism industry of Xi'an.
Netflix-like Youku has not published any official sales figures but based on Yicai's calculations the platform earned more than CNY80 million (USD11.1 million) from the concert that was held in the central city yesterday.
If all the nearly 2.2 million viewers bought the most affordable tickets of CNY39 (USD5.40) to watch the show online, Youku's revenue would exceed CNY84.3 million. But some may have even purchased the premium option of CNY99 to get access to more camera angles instead of just the main stage.
As ticket sales began, hotel searches in Xi'an surged by more than nine times for the two days of Aug. 5 and 6, according to Trip.Com. The number of orders doubled from a month ago. Moreover, fans were looking to visit tourist attractions in Xi'an as the number of ticket bookings increased by more than 38 times.
Xi’an has become the most popular destination for flight searches, according to Tongcheng Travel, another online travel agency. The related search volume jumped by almost six times from a month earlier, it added.
