(Yicai Global) Aug. 9 -- Just one day after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck China's southwest Sichuan province and killing at least 12 people, a 6.6-magnitude quake has shaken the northwest Xinjiang province.

No deaths, injuries or damage to buildings have been reported in connection to the latest tremor. The Xinjiang Earthquake Administration has begun level-II emergency response procedures, the second highest of the four response levels.

The earthquake was detected in Jinghe County, Xinjiang, about 100 kilometers from the Kazakhstan border, at 7.27 a.m., the China Earthquake Networks Center said. The quake's epicenter was 11 kilometers below the surface.

There is no direct connection between this quake and yesterday's in Sichuan, as they are on different seismic belts, said Jiang Haikun, director of the CENC forecasting department.
