(Yicai Global) Aug. 28 -- Some 800 million people will go on holiday during the Chinese National Day holiday, which runs from Oct. 1 to Oct. 7 this year, according to a China News Service report that cites tourism giant Ctrip.Com International.

Japan, Thailand and Italy will be the most popular destinations among outbound travelers, according to Ctrip's tourism trends forecast for the holiday. Russia, the United States, Turkey, Indonesia, Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom will fill out the top 10.

The most visited domestic regions include Lanzhou, Xining, Urumqi, the Ejin Banner and Beijing, according to the report, with Sanya, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai and Beijing being the most popular for self-guided tours. Those born in the 1980s made up the largest group of tourists, at 31 percent, with those born in the 1990s coming in second at 22 percent.

The National Day holiday celebrates the formation of the People's Republic of China, which is 70 years old this year.
