(Yicai Global) July 27 -- Some 85 percent of all area has been reserved by exhibitors for the fifth China International Import Expo, kicking off in Shanghai in just 100 days, as foreign industry giants eye deals in the Asian powerhouse.

The expo in Shanghai has attracted many Fortune Global 500 companies to join for the first time, including mining giants Rio Tinto and BHP Group, as well as German conglomerate Thyssenkrupp, and American drugmaker Gilead Sciences, Sun Chenghai, deputy director of the CIIE bureau, said at a press conference today as the 100-day countdown to the expo began. More than 270 of all exhibitors are Fortune Global 500 firms and industry leaders.

The 2022 CIIE will have the same six exhibition areas as before. It will also set up special exhibition zones for seed companies and artificial intelligence, Sun said. The expo will expand the innovation incubation zone from automobile, intelligent industry and information technology, as well as medical equipment and healthcare products to sports and fashion design.

The CIIE will promote the implementation of supportive policies for exhibitors, involving preferential taxes, customs clearance facilitation, and market access. Moreover, there will be more free booths for companies from the least developed countries. The expo will give a larger share of resources to small and medium-sized firms to ease the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent international uncertainties, Sun added.

China has held the nationwide import expo for four straight years since 2018. The exhibition area includes food and agricultural products, automobiles, intelligent industry and information technology, consumer goods, medical equipment and healthcare products, as well as trade in services. Transactions have amounted to USD272.3 billion, according to the organizer.
