Airbag Issue Prompts Volkswagen to Recall 4.86 Million Vehicles in China Airbag Issue Prompts Volkswagen to Recall 4.86 Million Vehicles in China

(Yicai Global) Sept. 14 -- Volkswagen (China) Sales Co., FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co. and Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co. have decided to recall 4.86 million vehicles from March 12, 2018, said China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

The front airbags of front seats in vehicles that the recall affects feature Takata Corp.-made ammonium nitrate gas generators that lack drying agents. When an airbag unfolds, the gas generator may be broken abnormally and generate debris, injuring those in vehicles.

Volkswagen will change the front airbags or gas generators of airbags in the driver's seat and front passenger seat of recalled vehicles for free.

The recalled vehicles include 103,000 imported Golfs, CCs and Magotans that Volkswagen (China) Sales sold; 2,352,000 New Boras and Audis that FAW-Volkswagen produced and sold; and 2,404,000 Santanas, Lavidas and Passats that Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive produced and sold.
