Alibaba-Backed Online Retailer Disappears From Android App Stores After Breaching Data Privacy Alibaba-Backed Online Retailer Disappears From Android App Stores After Breaching Data Privacy

(Yicai Global) July 30 -- Xiaohongshu has suddenly vanished from Chinese Android application stores, less than a month after a ministry added the owner of the Alibaba-backed lifestyle platform onto a list of companies that collect too much personal data.

Xiaohongshu, also known as Little Red Book, is communicating about the incident with relevant departments to find solutions, its Shanghai-based parent Xingyin Information Technology said in a statement today.

Xiaohongshu cannot be downloaded from app stores run by Huawei Technologies, Oppo Mobile Telecommunications and Tencent Holdings, some users said on Weibo yesterday. Apple's App Store still works fine, the persons added.

At the beginning of this month, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology included the platform, popular for its travel and beauty blogging content, among other apps that breached users' data privacy by collecting personal information without consent during the first quarter.

Founded in 2013, Xiaohongshu achieved 200 million registered users in March, according to its website. The number of monthly active users reached 85 million on June 6.
