Alibaba Culture and Entertainment Head Comes Under China's Lens for Graft Alibaba Culture and Entertainment Head Comes Under China's Lens for Graft

(Yicai Global) Dec. 4 -- Yang Weidong, president of Alibaba Culture and Entertainment, president of its video site Youku Tudou and chief executive of Ali Music, has allegedly become a person of interest to the authorities for corruption-related issues.

An insider with the parent company, Hangzhou-headquartered tech leviathan Alibaba Group Holding, confirmed this news to Yicai Global today, adding Fan Luyuan, board chairman of Alibaba Pictures Group, will concurrently assume the post of Youku president in his stead. Alibaba has verified that all police information is accurate in reply to the bombshell.

Yang's last public appearance was at a financial forum on Nov. 29 in Chengdu, in China's southwestern Sichuan province, where he gave a speech. He is the legal representative of 16 companies, an executive in 44 and a shareholder in two others, public data show.

This is not the first time Alibaba's culture and entertainment arm has had a brush with China's anti-graft drive. Lu Fanxi, Youku's former vice president, was alleged to have abused his office to engage in crime and was detained and investigated by police in February 2016. He had started his own business after resigning in July 2015 when the news broke.
