(Yicai Global) Aug. 2 -- Aliyun Computing Co., the cloud computing arm of China's e-commerce giant, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. [NYSE:BABA], signed a strategic agreement with Wuxi High-Tech Industrial Development Zone in East China's Jiangsu province. It is aimed at building a town featuring a highly developed Internet of Things (IoT) network as its "local specialty."

According to the agreement, the IoT division of Aliyun will create a platform, dubbed "Fei Feng," for basic IoT applications in Hongshan township in Wuxi, Cnstock.com reported. The new platform will be incorporated into Alibaba's IoT ecosystem strategy.

A test version of the Fei Feng platform and 20 pilot application projects will be developed by Sept. 10, and the platform is slated for official delivery before Dec. 31, said Ku Wei, general manager at Aliyun IoT. The company plans to expand the platform in three years to accommodate IoT applications in 500 to 1,000 cities across China, and roll out services to other places in Wuxi and Jiangsu province, Ku added.

Aliyun hopes to fully capitalize urban data via the Fei Feng platform, and make city management smarter leveraging data technology, said Du Xun, business director at Aliyun IoT. The firm also plans to build Hongshan into a template for the development of Xiongan New Area and similar initiatives in other parts of the country.

Wuxi is home to a national sensor network innovation park approved by the State Council, Cnstock.com reported. The city now has nearly 2,000 IoT companies with more than 150,000 employees. Their combined operating income totals USD29.7 billion, and has been growing at a rate of more than 20 percent per annum on average.
