AWS Suffers 12-Hour Outage in China AWS Suffers 12-Hour Outage in China

(Yicai Global) June 3 -- Amazon's cloud services unit suffered a massage outage in China yesterday lasting 12 hours.

Amazon Web Services were unavailable in the country between 2.00 a.m. to 1.48 p.m. (Beijing Time), according to a statement from the tech giant. The Seattle-based firm attributed the outage to the construction of new infrastructure.

Chinese educational firm VIPKid, artificial intelligence-based learning app Liulishuo and Samsung Apps were affected by the disruption to varying degrees while Amazon's local website was unavailable.

Optical cables used by the company were out of service during overnight work, resulting in the connection failures in China, according to the statement.

The outage was because AWS does not design its network redundancy well, one industry insider said. This is the ability to deploy back-up network devices when the main circuit breaks down. They are often slower and costly.

Tencent Holdings' optical cables were disconnected during work in March, impacting some firm, although the service was back up 150 seconds later.
