Biren's Pioneering GPU Chip, Other Four Projects Win SAIL Awards at 2022 WAIC Biren's Pioneering GPU Chip, Other Four Projects Win SAIL Awards at 2022 WAIC

(Yicai Global) Sept. 1 -- Five contestants, including the first graphics processing unit designed by a Shanghai-based startup, have won the highest awards during this year's World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai.

Biren Technology's BR100 chip, released last month, is one of the receivers of Super Artificial Intelligence Leader Awards, Yicai Global learned. The three-day conference ends on Sept. 3.

The BR100 has a competitive edge as the 16-bit floating point and 8-bit fixed-point chip series can reach hash rates exceeding 1,000 terahashes and 2,000 T, respectively, surpassing American chip giant Nvidia's products of the same levels, the Chinese firm said earlier.

The other four winners include a general AI platform developed by the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as a virtual reality platform Omniverse developed by California-based chip giant Nvidia. Moreover, there's Toumai, a laparoscopic surgical robot developed by Shanghai-based MicroPort Scientific. Finally, an achievement of in vivo imaging of cells reached by using intelligent microscopy, published by a research team at Tsinghua University, was granted the award.

Since the first WAIC in 2018, some 23 projects have won SAIL Awards. This year, more than 800 contestants competed for the acknowledgment, and the winners were selected by dozens of global experts.

There was another category of prizes. Six candidates, including mobile payment giant Alipay's intelligent anti-fraud system, Huawei Cloud Computing's AI-assisted drug design platform, and autonomous driving unicorn Horizon Robotics' automotive chip, took SAIL Stars Awards home.
