(Yicai Global) April 15 -- China's BOE Technology Group, a display supplier to Huawei Technologies and Dell, will join hands with US semiconductor giant Qualcomm to develop privacy-protected touchscreens that use fifth-generation wireless networks.

The pair intends to mass-produce Boe's flexible active-matrix organic light-emitting diode displays that feature Qualcomm 3D Sonic fingerprint readers in the second half of this year, Gao Wenbao, the Beijing-based firm's executive vice president wrote in a statement today on the company's website. The ultrasonic technology is safer than optical fingerprint scanners.

The two parties will collaborate on smartphones and other 5G devices and expect to expand in the fields of extended reality and the Internet of Things, the firm added.

The cooperation will enable original equipment manufacturers to design and develop cutting-edge products more easily, Chen Roawen, senior vice president at the San Diego-headquartered firm, said in the same statement.

BOE, which counts Samsung Electronics, LG, and Lenovo Group as some of its clients, made 45 percent less in net profit in the first three quarters of last year at CNY1.9 billion (USD269.1 million) from a year earlier. Its revenue climbed by 23 percent to CNY85.7 billion (USD12.1 billion).

BOE's stock price [SHE: 000725] stood unchanged at CNY3.84 (US 54 cents) by the closing bell.
