China Calls for Restraint as US Launches Welded Pipe Import Probe China Calls for Restraint as US Launches Welded Pipe Import Probe

(Yicai Global) Feb. 14 -- China has called on the U.S. to show restraint in its use of trade restrictions and to abide by multilateral trade rules following its decision to launch anti-dumping and countervailing investigations regarding imports of large-diameter welded pipes.

The process of global economic recovery remains fragile and requires all countries to work together, said Wang Hejun, head of the commerce ministry's trade remedy and investigation bureau, adding that the U.S. should play a positive role in promoting economic development worldwide.

The U.S. commerce department's anti-dumping probe concerns imports of pipes from South Korea, Turkey, Greece, India, Canada and China, while countervailing investigations relate to products from South Korea, Turkey, India and China.

Large-diameter welded pipes refer to welding carbon and alloy-steel pipes with a diameter larger than 16 inches (40.64 centimeters), which are used in transporting oil, gas and liquid, as well as for structural purposes such as piling.

China is concerned about the serious protectionist attitude shown by the U.S. regarding steel products. More than half (222) of current trade remedy measures taken by the country have concerned steel products, covering almost all types of products.

Although it is the right of World Trade Organization members to carry out such investigations, frequent and excessive protectionism in domestic industries cannot serve the original purpose of trade remedies and often creates a vicious cycle, said Wang.
