China's First Ride-Hailing Murderer's Falsely Poor Relatives Daunt Victim's Parents China's First Ride-Hailing Murderer's Falsely Poor Relatives Daunt Victim's Parents

(Yicai Global) March 1 -- The parents of a car-hailing driver who raped and murdered a female flight attendant during a ride have attempted to hide their assets in order to reduce the required compensation to the family of the 21-year old victim. They plan to appeal the verdict.

The father of Didi Chuxing Technology's carpooling driver had inherited two houses, but presented the court with fabricated sales contracts dated last March, state-backed The Paper reported yesterday, citing Zhengzhou court's verdict.

The court ordered the driver's parents to compensate CNY627,000 (USD93,600) to the victim's parents. The plaintiffs had required more, CNY776,000, to cover funeral expenses and other types of losses. Beijing-based Didi Chuxing has reached an agreement with them to offer additional monetary support.

"I want to appeal and find a lawyer who can help me for free," Beijing Youth Daily reported yesterday, citing the driver's father. The family already owes a lot of money, and since it has not inherited the son's property yet, it cannot pay for the damages, he added.

Driver Liu Zhenhua had registered on Didi's platform while using his father's identity and took up Li Mingzhu's order late at night on May 5. After the murder, he committed suicide by jumping into a river. After another murder took place during a carpooling ride last August, Didi suspended the service that involves more lax vetting of drivers' credentials than its usual car-sharing operations.
