China May Delay Tougher Vehicle Emission Standards Due to Covid-19 China May Delay Tougher Vehicle Emission Standards Due to Covid-19

(Yicai Global) April 9 -- China is considering a delay to the introduction of new vehicle emission standards due to come into force on July 1, an official said today, because of the blow already dealt to the auto industry and its global supply chain by the new coronavirus epidemic.

The move will give carmakers more time to make the transition to China VI vehicle emission criteria, some of the strictest on the planet, and give owners more time to upgrade their old vehicles, said Wu Xianfeng, deputy head of the Department of Atmospheric Environment under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Hubei province and its capital city of Wuhan, which were at the center of the Covid-19 outbreak in China, are major vehicle production areas. The spread of the virus globally has also affected the world’s auto parts supply chain, so it is becoming necessary to postpone the new standards, Wu said.

The stricter emission targets have been gradually rolled out since last July as part of its war against pollution. Many areas of China, including parts of Beijing and Shanghai, introduced the tougher rules ahead of time.

More than 97 percent of newly produced light vehicles in China already meet the new standards, Wu said.
