China Mobile Completes First 5G Test for 4K Video Transmission China Mobile Completes First 5G Test for 4K Video Transmission

(Yicai Global) Jan. 16 -- China Mobile, one of the country's big three state-owned telecoms carriers, has completed China's first transmission test for 4K resolution television signals based on 5G mobile networks.

The Beijing-based carrier, alongside state-owned China Media Group and the world's biggest telecoms equipment maker Huawei Technologies, conducted the test on Jan. 13, a worker at China Mobile's Guangdong offices told Yicai Global.

The firms transmitted in real-time a 4K video shot with state broadcaster CCTV's set up for the Spring Festival Gala, which takes place next month in Shenzhen, to CCTV's program control center in Beijing. They also sent the video in landscape format to a broadcasting vehicle outside the Shenzhen studio.

5G technology can provide data transfers up to dozens of times faster than current 4G standards, and China hopes to commercialize the networks in the second halfof this year, allowing smartphone users to download high-definition movies in a matter of seconds and boosting development prospects in smart transport, energy, education and other sectors.

CCTV holds the Spring Festival Gala every year on the eve of the Chinese New Year, inviting celebrities to perform on the show, which will be broadcast on Feb. 4 this year. It has been broadcast nationwide for 30 years.
