China's Ne Zha Vies for Oscar China's Ne Zha Vies for Oscar

(Yicai Global) Oct. 8 -- A smash hit at home in the Chinese mainland, animated fantasy adventure Ne Zha is headed to this year's Oscars.

The movie is among 93 films competing in the Best International Feature Film category, Xinhua News Agency reported today, citing The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Previously known as the Best Foreign Language Film category, The Academy renamed it in April for better international coverage.

Based in Chinese mythology, Ne Zha is a morality tale about a boy -- the title's eponymous hero -- who must choose between good and evil. This first feature film directed by Yang Yu grossed more than CNY4.9 billion (USD685.7 million) at the box office, second only to War Wolf 2.

Hong Kong will be represented in the same category by action flick The White Storm 2: Drug Lords, while Taiwan opted for romantic comedy Dear Ex.

The 92nd Academy Awards will be held at the Hollywood Dolby Theatre on Feb. 9.
