China Opposes 'Long-Arm Jurisdiction' by the US Over Chinese Enterprises and Individuals China Opposes 'Long-Arm Jurisdiction' by the US Over Chinese Enterprises and Individuals

(Yicai Global) Aug. 24 -- China opposes unilateral sanctions outside the framework of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, and particularly opposes any country's 'long-arm jurisdiction' over China's enterprises and individuals by enforcing its domestic laws, China's ministry of foreign affairs said in response to the sanctions imposed by the United States on China's enterprises and individuals for allegedly advancing North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons program.

On Aug. 22, the US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on 10 companies and six individuals from China and Russia, among which are six companies from China. The US statement claimed that these companies and individuals helped North Korea to develop weapons of mass destruction, violated the UN Security Council's resolution and attempted to evade the US sanctions. Under the sanctions, the assets and interests of these enterprises and individuals in the US will be frozen, and they will be prohibited from trading with the US citizens.

The ministry of foreign affairs said that China's efforts in implementing the Security Council's resolution comprehensively and earnestly and fulfilling its international obligations are obvious to all. As to China's enterprises and individuals, China will investigate those suspected violating Security Council's resolution under the domestic law. The US's actions do not help solve the problem, nor enhance the mutual trust and cooperation between two countries. China demands US to withdraw sanctions immediately.
