China's Population to Peak at 1.43 Billion in 2028, New Study Shows China's Population to Peak at 1.43 Billion in 2028, New Study Shows

(Yicai Global) June 3 -- China's population will reach 1.43 billion, its highest point, in 2028, according to the findings of a new study.

The population will hit around 1.41 billion next year and fall to about 1.35 billion by 2050, according to a report that was released today at the 2019 annual meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development held in Hangzhou.

The research team behind the study included Chinese and foreign experts including Maria Krautzberger, president of the German Federal Environment Agency, Prof. Sun Youhai, dean of Tianjin University Law School, and Prof. Wang Yi, associate dean of the Institute of Science and Development of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The number of people aged over 60 will reach 261 million next year, accounting for 18.5 percent of the total, the study shows. That figure will swell to 448 million in 2050, meaning the elderly will make up just over a third of the population.

China's gross domestic product will grow at an average rate of around 5 percent from 2021 to 2035, fluctuating between 4 percent and 6 percent, according to the study. It will range between 3 percent and 4 percent in the years 2036 to 2050.
