China's Shopping Center Development Index Shows Positivity for Second Half China's Shopping Center Development Index Shows Positivity for Second Half

(Yicai Global) Aug. 31 -- China's shopping center development index fell to 64.8 in the second quarter, down 3.5 points from the previous quarter but still 14.8 points above the 50-point split, showing overall expansion is maintaining good momentum, China's Ministry of Commerce said in a statement today.

In sub-indices, the current situation index was 57.9, down 5.7 points from the first quarter, showing operating performance dipped after the Chinese New Year sales season at the end of January. Summer sales have also not kicked off yet. The anticipation index was 75.1, with nearly 95 percent of shopping center owners expecting sales to grow over the next six months.

The current rental activity index for the second quarter was 81.3, up 0.5 point and showing that brands are still willing to enter shopping centers. The cost control index fell 6.7 points to 33, suggesting owners' operating costs are still rising, mostly due to increasing investment in marketing and technology, the ministry said.

Overall, the market for shopping malls is maintaining solid development. In the second half, the Golden Week holiday in November and year-end sales will play a catalytic role in the sector, and the confidence of owners will further improve, it added.
