China Southern Airlines Inaugurates Guangzhou-Langkawi Route to Boost SE Asia Tour Market China Southern Airlines Inaugurates Guangzhou-Langkawi Route to Boost SE Asia Tour Market

(Yicai Global) July 12 -- China Southern Airlines Co. has started a non-stop flight from Guangzhou to Malaysia's Langkawi on Tuesday to meet the growing demand among Chinese holidaymakers for summer vacations in Langkawi and other Southeast Asian islands.

Many local travel agencies in Guangdong province have introduced Langkawi summer tour products that last five to six days, priced between USD450 (CNY3,000) and CNY7,000, China News Service reported.

The new route will drive down air fares, Cai Minyu, general manager at Guangzhou-based 'Go From Guangzhou' Southeast Asia Tourism Center, told the news agency. In addition, travel agencies have made extensive flight bookings in advance to minimize costs, and prices of Langkawi tours have dropped significantly this summer as a result, she added.

Summer is usually the boom period for Southeast Asian island tours in the Guangzhou tourism market, and local holidaymakers have a strong preference for non-stop flights, Cai noted. Langkawi lies off Malaysia's northwest coast. The country's largest archipelago, it features 99 tropical islands and boasts sandy beaches, grottoes, forests and spectacular waterfalls. Malaysia's AirAsia BHD [KL:5099] opened the first non-stop route from Guangzhou to Langkawi airport last January. With no need to transfer in Kuala Lumpur, passengers will now be able to save three to four hours on a one-way trip after the non-stop flight starts. The addition of the Southern Airlines' new route means the frequency of Guangzhou to Langkawi flights has risen to one flight each day.
