China's CATL Deploys Embodied Intelligent Robots at Luoyang Battery Plant(Yicai) Dec. 18 -- Contemporary Amperex Technologies, the global leader in electric vehicle batteries, has started using Xiao Mo embodied intelligent robots to perform complex tasks, including the assembly of battery connectors, at its Luoyang factory in Henan province.
The factory has become the world's first to deploy embodied intelligent robots to its battery pack production lines, CATL announced late yesterday. Xiao Mo was developed by Spirit AI, a Hangzhou-based startup backed by the founder of CATL.
The Xiao Mo robots are responsible for the final functional testing of battery packs before they are released from the production line, CATL said. The process requires the precise connection of testing plugs carrying high voltage to designated positions on the pack, it added.
The robots can reduce the defect rate on the battery production line, enhancing product stability, and increase daily workload by three times compared to manual operations, CATL pointed out.
Functional testing was heavily reliant on manual operations, which carries the risk of high-voltage arcing and faces challenges with maintaining consistent work efficiency and quality control, CATL pointed out.
Equipped with an advanced end-to-end vision-language-action model, Xiao Mo possesses strong environmental perception and task generalization capabilities. It works accurately in positioning and is reliable in efficiency, while it can also dynamically adjust operating conditions based on differences in battery models.
