China’s Couriers Deliver Record Number of Parcels in First 11 Days of November, Postal Bureau Says China’s Couriers Deliver Record Number of Parcels in First 11 Days of November, Postal Bureau Says

(Yicai) Nov. 13 -- The number of packages collected between Nov. 1 and Nov. 11, which coincides with the Double 11 online shopping bonanza, surged to an all-time high as consumer spending bounces back in China, according to the latest data.

The number of parcels accepted by the country’s post offices and express delivery firms in the first 11 days of the month soared 23.2 percent year on year to 5.3 billion, according to data from the State Post Bureau. Daily turnover was 1.4 times normal levels.

There were 639 million parcels collected on Nov. 11 alone, a year-on-year increase of 15.7 percent and more than one-and-a-half times the volume on a normal day, the bureau said.

Apart from dealing with the vast volume of packages, couriers also put more emphasis on maintaining a high quality of service during the Double 11 shopping bonanza this year.

JD.com's logistics arm set itself the target of completing the delivery of 95 percent of the goods ordered on the e-commerce platform the same day or the next day across 1,500 districts and county-level areas, JD Logistics said. The Beijing-based firm realized half-day or same-day deliveries for over 10 million types of products that are kept in stock.

And same-day or next-day deliveries by Alibaba Group Holding’s logistics unit of goods ordered on the company's platforms in the 24 hours after 8 p.m. on Oct. 31 jumped 50 percent from the same period last year, Cainiao said.

STO Express' branch in Changping town in Dongguan, southern Guangdong province spent over CNY5 million (USD685,280) on venues and equipment to get ready for the Double 11 event, Zhang Mengyi, the branch manager, told Yicai. This included buying a new set of automated parcel handling equipment and a narrow-belt sorter.

The investment was well worth it as the number of orders doubled from the same period last year and deliveries surged more than 28 percent to 50,000 units a day, Zhang said. And 97 percent of deliveries for signed for each day.

The branch managed to increase its income this year as the automated equipment helped to reduce expenditure on labor costs, he added.

And the peak delivery season is expected to continue until the Chinese New Year festival next year, according to the State Post Bureau.
