Chinese Firms Offer Cash, Supplies to Help Out in Quake-Hit Areas(Yicai) Dec. 20 -- Over 30 Chinese companies are donating large sums of money and plenty of supplies for rescue work and post-disaster reconstruction in the wake of a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that rocked the northwestern provinces of Gansu and Qinghai on Dec. 18, killing at least 126 people, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The Tencent Foundation and TikTok operator ByteDance’s charitable foundation are each giving away CNY20 million (USD2.8 million). ByteDance is also linking arms with Chinese movie star Jet Li’s One Foundation to donate 1,000 cotton quilts.
E-commerce titan Alibaba Group Holding has donated over 50,000 boxes of emergency supplies and gifted CNY10 million (USD1.4 million). While rival Pinduoduo has also released CNY20 million for the purchase of goods such as thermal clothing and tents and for post-disaster reconstruction in the quake epicenter of Jishishan county.
Other tech giants such as Baidu’s fintech arm Duxiaoman Financial, Ant Group, Xiaomi Corp’s charity foundation as well as NetEase are donating money and supplies.
Chinese sportswear company Anta Sports is donating CNY40 million of cold weather clothing and another sports brand Li Ning is distributing CNY20 million of outdoor heating supplies.
Hotpot chain operator Haidilao, investment holding company Yihai International Holding and supply-chain services provider Shuhai Supply Chain Solutions are handing out cash and food. Chinese dairy producer Yili Industrial Group has also donated CNY1.5 million (USD210,919) in cash as well as supplies.
Carmakers are also doing their bit. Chery Holdings has donated CNY12 million. BYD’s philanthropic foundation has gifted CNY10 million in cash. BMW’s China division and its China joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive have donated CNY3 million while GAC Group and Great Wall Motor are handing out CNY5 million respectively. Great Wall Motor is also offering 35 vehicles.
Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca’s China arm and Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals have both donated CNY1 million. Hengrui has also collected CNY1 million of medicines and sent them to the quake-stricken areas.
Chinese carrier China Eastern Airlines, e-commerce behemoth JD.Com, logistics provider Cainiao, ride-hailer Didi Chuxing as well as express delivery companies ZTO Express, YTO Express and STO Express have also been quick to help, sending drinking water, food, warm clothing and many other supplies to assist those affected.
ByteDance’s charitable platform is helping to search for missing people. And Yili’s hotlines on social networking platforms Weibo and WeChat are sourcing infant formula for babies.
