Chinese Game Developer Giant Looks Overseas for Growth Chinese Game Developer Giant Looks Overseas for Growth

(Yicai Global) Jan. 23 -- Chinese online game developer Giant Interactive Group has finished building its overseas teams and will flex its muscles abroad this year, since the home market is almost at saturation point, state media China Securities Daily reported.

Shanghai-based Giant, which deployed overseas expansion teams and business teams in New York and elsewhere at the end of last year, plans to take part in the US PAX East, the US E3, the German Gamescom and other top international fairs this year, per the announcement.

Giant shares [SHE:002558] rose 1.43 percent to close at CNY19.84 (USD2.9) today.

The company will also push its Pascal Contract, Project Dunk and other new offerings at the Taipei Game Show later this month.

The growth rate of China's mobile game revenue dropped to 41.7 percent from 144 percent from 2014 to 2017, with the local market near saturation.

The country's online game revenue was CNY105 billion (USD15.5 billion) in the first half of last year, up 5.2 percent, while the actual sales revenue from overseas reached USD9.6 billion in a jump of 15.8 percent, per a market report research institute Gamma Data (CNG) issued for last year.

The country's gaming sector is also coming under ever more watchful oversight.

Only one of Giant's games has been passed for release since the Chinese government re-started approvals in December last year, saying domestic developers must now cast their gaze abroad.
