Express Delivery Volume Will Top 1.5 Billion Items Over Double 11, China Post Predicts Express Delivery Volume Will Top 1.5 Billion Items Over Double 11, China Post Predicts

(Yicai Global) Nov. 2 -- During this year's Double 11 e-commerce shopping carnival, China's express volume will reach 1.5 billion, an increase of 35 percent per year, as the State Post Bureau projects.

On Nov. 1, the Post Bureau held a meeting on security for express services in peak seasons. It will ensure smooth, safe and stable express services during the Double 11 fest to avert network paralysis, blasting warehouse at key nodes and other unforeseen circumstances, China News Network reported.

During this year's Double 11 (from Nov. 11 to Nov. 16), the nationwide express volume will exceed 1.5 billion, an increase of 35 percent on an annual basis. The maximum single-day throughput may reach 340 million, three times the daily handling capacity, China Post Bureau forecast.

Nearly 30 million square meters of operating area, almost 90,000 trunk transport vehicles and 3 million existing staff and temporary employees will be deployed into the postal industry nationwide, while more unmanned aerial vehicles and automatic sorting robots will also activate.

The State Post Bureau, express industry leader S.F. Express (Group) Co. [SHE:002352] and China Railway Corp. have set aside more than 200 high-speed rail lines dedicated to logistics transport. Other express companies are also actively developing their railway plans to effectively complement the logistics transport capacity of main lines.

Double 11, or 'Singles' Day,' started as a 'counter-Valentine's Day' male students at Nanjing University pioneered in the 1990s to protest and resist societal pressure to get hitched at a young age. The students may also have taken their inspiration from the four single digits in the date, which is the prevailing, if erroneous view as to the origin of the term. Apocryphal or not, the celebration has since evolved into China's e-commerce Black Friday.
