Fundamental Research Is Important in Future Technical Innovation, Says China's Sci-Tech Minister Fundamental Research Is Important in Future Technical Innovation, Says China's Sci-Tech Minister

(Yicai Global) Sept. 25 -- Fundamental research will form an important part of future technical innovation, China's science and technology minister said at a forum the Shanghai government held on Sept. 23.

"Carry out fundamental research into technological power, seize the opportunity of the new round of scientific and technical revolution and industrial transformation, take the industrial step forward from mid-to-high end, form first-mover advantages and mold a leading-type new developmental paradigm: these are the important affairs in the future period," said Wan Gang, China's minister of science and technology in a keynote speech to the 2017 Pujiang Innovation Forum held Sept. 23.

Basic research is the foundation upon which to build world technological power, and it is pressing for masters of science  with major original scientific achievements and of an international top rank to build up world technological power, Wan said. Tightly linking basic research with the demands of industry and technology forms powerful original innovation ability.

"We have to optimize the fundamental research matrix, establish and perfect the diversified input mechanism for basic research, construct a high-level foundational research base, and establish an evaluation mechanism which conforms to the features of fundamental research," Wan stressed, further exhorting listeners to fortify the integrity of research, abide by academic morality, cleave to social responsibility and exercise zero tolerance of dishonorable behavior in scientific research.
