(Yicai Global) Sept. 16 -- General Motors launched its Ultium electric vehicle platform in the Chinese market this week. The US auto giant also announced that a Hummer EV based on the platform will go on show for the first time at the China International Import Export in November.

GM will release the Cadillac Lyriq, a sports utility vehicle based on the Ultium platform -- the world’s first ultra-large electric vehicle platform -- in China next year, the Detroit-based automaker said at a press conference on Sept. 14.

In June, GM announced that it would raise investment in EVs and autonomous driving to USD35 billion in 2025 from USD27 billion in 2020, and launch 30 battery electric vehicle models. The new platform is key to rolling out the plan.

“Ultium will bring an inspiring, empowering and encouraging EV experience to Chinese consumers,” a press release quoted Julian Blissett, GM executive vice president and president of GM China, as saying.

GM said Ultium can make almost every vehicle an EV. Its flexible battery architecture can be easily equipped with electric drive systems and large-capacity cells. The platform’s battery cells and other key components are being localized in China.

SAIC-GM plans to launch more than 10 new energy models in China based on the platform by 2025, covering the three major brands Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac and the sedan, SUV, and luxury SUV categories.

GM recently brought back the Hummer brand, launching the Hummer EV Edition 1, the first all-electric supertruck. The new model is not yet on sale, but more than 10,000 have already been ordered worldwide.

The Hummer EV has one motor on the front axle, producing 1,000 horsepower. It can reach 100 kilometers per hour in three seconds, and has a 640 km range. It also supports super-fast charging, so it can run 100 km after only a 10-minute charge.

It will be on display at the fourth China International Import Expo in Shanghai, which is scheduled for Nov. 5 to 10.
