(Yicai Global) June 6 -- Guangdong Power Grid, a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid, plans to build more than 10,000 charging piles in the southeastern Guangdong province by the end of 2020 as it aims to expand the infrastructure construction to meet the increasing demand driven by the popularity of energy vehicles.

GPG plans to invest CNY2.7 billion (USD422 million) to build a charging network in the province to allow EVs to run without battery power problems in medium and small cities of the Pearl River Delta metropolitan region, state-run news agency China News Service reported.

By the end of last month, GPG had already put 2,686 charging piles into use, and had completed the construction of 24 bus and 73 urban public charging stations. GRG is building an EV charging network which covers public areas, residential communities and highways of almost all cities in Guangdong.

To solve the problem of low usage rate caused by the incompatibility between different types of charging equipment, GPG also has set up a charging infrastructure promotion alliance, which is made up of more than 50 companies, forming an intelligent charging service platform and connecting the major charging pile operators in the province.
