(Yicai Global) Nov. 27 -- Harbin Electric Co. [HKG:1133] (HE), a large state-owned group in China's northeastern Heilongjiang province, has successfully developed a new world-class ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) grid compensator, for which testing has already been completed, China News reported on Saturday.

The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) awarded a contract to HE in May last year for the construction of eight new compensators. Testing revealed that the units met parameters, performance and indexes set through SGCC's design requirements.

A compensator is a motor used to raise a power system's stability and can also improve the grid's power supply quality. With the fast development of the UHVDC grid, the grid's operating characteristics have changed, and could bring challenges to power supply during malfunctions. It is there very important to construct new compensators.

After HE's compensators are put into operation, they will provide protection for the grid and the transmission of UHVDC.

HE is a large electrical equipment manufacturing base constructed in collaboration with the former Soviet Union. Harbin Electric Company Limited [HK:1133] was the first state-owned enterprise in northeast China to list in Hong Kong.
