HTC's USD64 Million Second-Quarter Loss Marks Ninth Straight Losing Quarter HTC's USD64 Million Second-Quarter Loss Marks Ninth Straight Losing Quarter

(Yicai Global) Aug. 15 -- Major Taiwanese electronics maker HTC Corp. [TPE:2498] reported a net loss of USD64.23 million (CNY428.3 million) for the second quarter of the year, marking the company's ninth consecutive loss-making quarter.

During the period, the firm saw revenues rise 11 percent annually to USD531 million (CNY3.54 billion), driven by a positive market response to new product releases in May. However, it still had a net loss of USD64.23 million, slightly better than the USD66.78 million first-quarter loss. Its profit margin fell from 16.3 percent in the year-ago period to 13.7 percent.

From 2008 to 2011, sales of HTC mobile phones grew rapidly. However, sales dropped off sharply five years ago due to a lack of core competitiveness and the enormous pressure brought by the rise of mobile phone brands such as Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and Huawei.

HTC had sales of CNY17.67 billion (USD2.6 billion) last year, an annual fall of 35 percent to give the lowest level in 11 years. During the first six months of this year, HTC's total net loss reached USD131 million.

The losses will continue to rise in the third quarter due to slow July sales, analysts say.
