(Yicai Global) July 16 -- Chinese telecom titan Huawei Technologies signed a cooperation agreement with the government of Malta, under which it will help it institute its smart city program through the company's 5G technologies.

Huawei will strive to help Malta solve problems in public security, video analysis, data processing, and information and telecom technologies, said Silvio Schembri, Malta's junior minister for financial services, digital economy and innovation, China's  state Xinhua News Agency reported.

Huawei will also give Maltese students two-week information and telecom technology training, Schembri said, adding the company will share its professional knowledge and latest technologies with the EU member to help it lure more investors and telecom operators.

By offering quicker network connections and the technological basis for smart citification, smart society and smart industry, 5G technologies will help Malta embark on the path to urban intelligence, said Miu Xiaoyang, the head of Huawei's Italian business at the July 14 signing.

Malta is an island country lying in the Mediterranean Sea in the strategic narrows between Sicily and North Africa. Its population is about 440,000 and its highly-developed economy mainly rests on the service and financial sectors, with tourism another mainstay, 2016 statistics show.
