Huawei and Audi Plan to Release 5G Autonomous Vehicle by 2020 to Help Improve Road Safety Huawei and Audi Plan to Release 5G Autonomous Vehicle by 2020 to Help Improve Road Safety

(Yicai Global) June 11 -- China's telecoms equipment giant Huawei technologies and German carmaker Audi will jointly develop 5G network vehicles, a senior executive of the Chinese company confirmed.

He Gang, president of Huawei's Mobile Phone Product Line, released the full version of a report he initially published on his microblogging Weibo account, revealing the tie-up. He referred the report to foreign media without disclosing the main source.

Powered by 5G network technology, the vehicles jointly developed by Huawei and Audi are expected to be released in 2020. This technology will enable the vehicles to realize safer semi-automatic driving via V2X communication technology, a new concept of intelligent transport system which refers to vehicle-to-everything wireless technology aimed at increasing road safety and improving traffic management, said the original report.

The V2X wireless technology, which involves vehicle-to-vehicle, V2V, and vehicle-to-infrastructure, V2I, communication, is tested in East China's Jiangsu province. It is capable of automatically identifying traffic conditions, traffic lights and road signs and intelligently controlling the running speed to realize the semi-automatic driving via navigation system. It is expected to cover 90 percent of the urban roads and highways in China by 2020 if it yields successful test results, said the original report.
