Huawei Supports CFO's Fight for Justice, Firm Says After Losing Key Extradition Battle Huawei Supports CFO's Fight for Justice, Firm Says After Losing Key Extradition Battle

(Yicai Global) May 28 -- Huawei Technologies is not giving up despite its disappointment in the Canadian court’s ruling that should push forward Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou's extradition to the US.

"Huawei continues to stand with Ms. Meng in her pursuit for justice and freedom. We expect that Canada’s judicial system will ultimately prove Ms. Meng’s innocence," the Shenzhen-based company said in a statement this morning. "Ms. Meng's lawyers will continue to work tirelessly to see justice is served.”

CGTN reported that Meng's lawyers will continue to fight the extradition order.

The telecoms firm did not reveal whether it is planning to immediately appeal the decision. The daughter of Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei and her lawyers are supposed to appear in the Supreme Court of British Columbia next month to schedule more hearings, according to Canadian broadcaster CTV News.

The verdict symbolized a key battle for Meng to stay outside the scope of US sanctions. But Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes decided that the CFO's alleged crimes should constitute a crime in Canada, a principle known as "double criminality." That would mean that Meng, who is accused of violating US sanctions against Iran, would need to face trial in the US.

Canada should immediately correct its mistake, release Meng, and ensure her safe return to China, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said yesterday. The US and Canada abused their bilateral extradition treaty and arbitrarily took compulsory measures against a Chinese citizen without a cause, Zhao added.

Meng was arrested by Canadian police at Vancouver's airport on Dec. 1, 2018, after which she has been under house arrest in Vancouver where she owns property.
