(Yicai Global) Sept. 26 -- Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies Co. will provide its Kirin 970 processor for artificial intelligence in mobile computing and open it up to more developers and partners, Ai Wei, vice president, said in a press briefing about the chip on Sept. 25.

"From research and development right through to the market, Huawei offers a complete platform," Ai said. "Now we plan to provide a development framework in some open source communities."

After breaking performance bottlenecks, mobile AI calculation will lead to new artificial intelligence experiences. However, its advancement requires a joint effort from the industry and millions of developers, and is closely related to user feedback, he added.

"Huawei will provide the Kirin 970 as a mobile computing platform, so developers can use its powerful capacity to open up an intelligent society with their unlimited imaginations," Ai said.

The firm's first artificial intelligence mobile computing platform, the Kirin 970 has been dubbed China's "nuclear weapon" in terminals. From a market perspective, the chips are helping Huawei create a larger mobile ecosystem.

Huawei announced 11 partners for the technology, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qihoo 360 Technology Co., and similar academic institutions and companies.

"If the platform is built successfully, it will enable Huawei to compete with China's big three tech firms and other cloud service providers on a strategic level in the forthcoming AI era without being marginalized," Wang Yang, China research director at IHS Technology, told Yicai Global.

Without an open platform to cooperate with application developers, room for terminal companies will shrink in the Big Data era, Wang believes.
