(Yicai Global) Feb. 7 -- The group of China’s top 10 new buildings for 2021, which includes museums, public housing, and transport hubs, highlights the country's economic development and the integration of tradition with greener lifestyles.

Yicai Media Group compiled the list based on architecture awards and acknowledgments.

Shanghai Expo Cultural Park

The former 2010 World Expo site was upgraded and reopened late last year in Shanghai's Pudong New Area. Four-fifths of the about two-square-kilometer venue is covered with greenery. It is linked with the Huangpu River and has about 16 hectares of waterways. The project should be fully ready by 2024.

New public housing in Beijing’s Baiziwan

Baiziwan, an area close to Beijing's central business district Chaoyang, finished a new public housing project in late 2019. The 93,900-square meter project accommodates 4,000 households. The complex features sporting and elderly care facilities, as well as good transport links and commercial services.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, the southwestern city's second airport, kicked off operations last June. The design was inspired by an artifact that was unearthed at the Jinsha Ruins in the city in Sichuan province.

The airport is the largest civil aviation base constructed during China’s 13th Five-Year Plan till 2020. It took about five years to finish construction. The project has three runways, terminal buildings, and supporting facilities that cover 710,000 square meters of area. The airport can facilitate a throughput of 60 million passengers and 1.3 million tons of cargo per year.

 Jiaxing Railway Station in Zhejiang province

The station was expanded and integrated with a park, after which it was reopened last June. The revamped design should offer passengers a public space with entertainment and leisure.

Qingdao's Haitian Center

Completed in 2021, the nearly 369-meter-tall Qingdao Haitian Center is in the tallest building in Shandong province.

The project, designed by US agency Archilier Architecture, integrates historical heritage with coastal features. The curvy building was built on the site of an old hotel called the Haitian Hotel that was demolished in 2013.

Hong Kong's M+ Museum

The special administrative region of Hong Kong received a new cultural attraction as the M+ opened last November. Designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the center of visual culture has a unique shape of an upside-down letter T. The facade can be turned into the world's largest screen.

Shanghai Astronomy Museum

In Lingang New City, the Shanghai Astronomy Museum seeks to impress its visitors with its space-themed design that includes beautiful openings of light in the ceiling and an inverted dome to evoke a sense of weightlessness.

He Art Museum in Foshan

He Art Museum in southern China's Guangdong province was opened last March. The private art museum marks a first for Japanese architect Tadao Ando in the Pearl River Delta.

Yang Liping Performing Arts Center in Dali

The center, which is named after the famous dancer Yang Liping, was designed by Beijing-based Studio Zhu Pei. The architects chose an open-plan structure for the venue that is located nearby Dali in Yunnan province to make way for the natural environment.

Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum

Built on the site of an ancient kiln factory, the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum was inspired by the shape of a type of oven. It invites visitors to appreciate the entrepreneurship and craftsmanship of China's traditional culture.
