JD.Com's AI Unit to Set Up 2nd Global Headquarters in Chengdu JD.Com's AI Unit to Set Up 2nd Global Headquarters in Chengdu

(Yicai Global) Nov. 29 -- An artificial intelligence unit of JD.Com will establish its second headquarters in southwest China's Chengdu to provide regional governments and local firms with services related to transport, environment, city management and public security.

JD iCity will set up a global research and development center in the capital of Sichuan province to make AI and big data technologies, state-backed news website China Internet Information Center reported yesterday. The scale of investment will reach at least CNY500 million (USD71.9 million). The first headquarters is in Nanjing.

Spun off from JD Finance (now called JD Digital Technology) in February, JD iCity is part of the company's big plan to compete with domestic rivals Tencent Holdings, Alibaba Group Holding and Baidu who are all active in the fields of AI, big data, and the Internet of Things. Beijing-based JD.Com's sub-brand has already served 30 cities including Tianjin, Nanjing, and Fuzhou.

JD iCity has already done research involving consumption patterns and logistics in Chengdu, as well as created a smart air quality forecasting platform, said Zheng Yu, the vice president of JD Group, who attended the signing ceremony with the municipal government.
