Proxy Tomb-Sweeping Is Shanghai's New Choice for Honoring Dead Proxy Tomb-Sweeping Is Shanghai's New Choice for Honoring Dead

(Yicai Global) April 7 -- Yicai Global visited Shanghai cemeteries and found that tomb-sweeping by proxy has become the latest choice for city residents amid the Covid-19 pandemic to honor their departed ancestors during the Qingming memorial festival.

Staff perform tomb-sweeping stand-in services at the Fushouyuan Cemetery in Shanghai on March 26.

The city's graveyards scheduled appointments for burial for those needing them, but strictly controlled the number of attendees at funerals, with no more than 10 people per household allowed during this year's Qingming Festival.

For some residents who have a reasonable need to do on-site tomb-sweeping, Shanghai has offered a limited number of appointments at separate times, with registration for this starting on March 26.

Locals memorialize their loved ones by appointment at Shanghai's Fushouyuan Cemetery on April 2.
