'RoboCop' Mans Tian'anmen Square Checkpoint(Yicai Global) Oct. 9 -- During China's National Day Holiday, an endearing robot policeman deployed at a security checkpoint at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, a historical site with throngs of tourists, as Beijing Youth Daily reported.
A reporter from Beijing Youth Daily chanced upon the engaging white robotic constable 'manning' a security checkpoint at Tiananmen Square, which was moving to and fro within a fenced-off area. This R2-D2 cop periodically reminded visitors to stand in an orderly line for the security inspection.
This robocop started its first day of duty on Oct. 1 (the first day of the National Day Holiday) and would end its service there on Oct. 8 (the end of the National Day Holiday), with its main task to cyclically remind tourists to conduct themselves in an orderly manner at the security checkpoint where multitudes of sightseers had gathered, a security staff member there told Yicai Global. This robot really eased the security detail's workload, the staffer said.
"We preset the language that this robot policeman would use to remind tourists at regular intervals to behave in an orderly fashion. The robot contains sensors that direct it to automatically stop once it detects people to its front," explained the staffer. "However, it is not able to talk with tourists at present."
