(Yicai Global) Feb. 21 -- Four young comedians shared their feelings and emotions from watching the Beijing Winter Olympics at a stand-up comedy event held in Shanghai on Feb. 18.

The four were Yang Mengqi, also known as Norah Yang, Li Xingyue, Guo Zhanhao and Yarong, which means duck down in Chinese. The show was staged at IP Mall in the city’s Jing’an district.

“What is the gap between you and Eileen Gu?,” Yang asked an audience member who can ski. “About the height of Shanghai Tower,” the person replied, referring to the world’s third-highest building.

Stand-up is an increasingly popular form of entertainment in China, and the Winter Olympics has inspired comedians to use snow and ice sports as a new topic for their material.

Yang said she got to know some amazing sports she had not encountered before, like the skeleton. “If it weren’t for the Winter Olympics, I would never have thought of jokes about such sports,” she said.

Yang also mentioned that friends of hers who are parents are now paying attention to winter sports education for their children. “I’ll make jokes from this angle,” she said.

Stand-up was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Shanghai last year, with a total of 660 performances at professional theaters in 2021, according to the Shanghai Performance Arts Association. Xiaoguo Culture Media grossed more than CNY80 million (USD12.6 million) from such events last year, a fourfold gain on 2020.
