Shanghai Ranks First for Parcels Delivered Via Alibaba's Cainiao Platform over Chinese New Year Shanghai Ranks First for Parcels Delivered Via Alibaba's Cainiao Platform over Chinese New Year

(Yicai Global) Feb. 23 -- China's eastern economic powerhouse of Shanghai came top of a ranking of cities measuring the volume of parcel deliveries made over the Chinese New Year holiday using Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s logistics platform Cainiao.

Beijing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Shenzhen rounded off the top five cities in Cainiao Network Technology Co.'s ranking, news outlet Tencent Tech reported on its website.

Chengdu in western China's Sichuan province and the central city of Wuhan saw significant rises, the report said, with the two places ranking eighth and tenth, respectively. Tianjin, Suzhou and Nanjing were also in the top-ten.

Cainiao's platform helps some couriers to achieve average delivery times of around 24 hours, with one customer in Beijing's Tongzhou district receiving a parcel a mere 36 minutes after placing the order.

Due to the shortage of manpower during the holiday, the industry was unable to maintain the high levels of efficiency seen in the past, Cainiao said. However, through the new model of cooperation between online platforms and offline outlets, the sector's overall speed and operations can be improved in the future.

Cainiao is a service platform jointly established by Alibaba Group and several logistics companies in 2013, which aims to provide digital supply chain management for logistics and e-commerce firms.
