(Yicai Global) Nov. 1 -- Swiss electronics and automation heavyweight ABB Group and Shanghai Seventh People's Hospital started work on the first phase of their joint smart pharmacy yesterday using cutting-edge technologies to boost operational efficiency.

The pharmacy will integrate many new technologies including automation and artificial intelligence to achieve drug traceability, smart warehousing as well as drug sorting and distribution, the Shanghai Observer reported. It is expected to open in two years' time.

The pharmacy will reduce repetitive and laborious tasks done by staff, improve operational efficiency, increase traceability and lower the error rate. It will also be used in a number of different scenarios, including outpatient and inpatient pharmacies and pharmacy intravenous admixture services.

But this is only the beginning, said Wang Jiening, president of the Seventh People's Hospital. The hospital will also actively explore the use of automation, intelligent and digital technologies. In the future, there will be robots wearing name cards working in the hospital, he added.

ABB has previously said it plans to introduce robots into medical labs and logistics, the Zurich-based company said. It will continue to invest in the field of service robots.
