TCL Supplier China Star to Catch 5G Wave by Rolling Out Flexible Displays in Fourth Quarter TCL Supplier China Star to Catch 5G Wave by Rolling Out Flexible Displays in Fourth Quarter

(Yicai Global) Aug. 30 -- China Star Optoelectronics Technology, a display supplier to TCL, will start mass-producing various types of flexible display products by the end of this year to prepare for the rise of fifth-generation wireless phones. It also revealed its new 75-inch TV screen.

Once the Wuhan plant in Central China will be completed in the fourth quarter, Star Optoelectronics will start delivering flexible active-matrix organic light-emitting diode screens to clients, Chief Executive Jin Xuzhi, who is also a senior vice president of TCL, told Yicai Global at a product launch ceremony today.

The Shenzhen-headquartered firm released its 4K resolution mini LED-backlit liquid crystal display that will be mass-produced next year. The firm penned cooperation agreements with multiple LED chipmakers today to ensure supplies of raw materials.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics has dominated the global AMOLED display market for a long time but various Chinese screen makers, including Tianma Microelectronics, have recently announced plans to start producing flexible displays ahead of the 5G phone boom.

Most of 5G mobile phones will be equipped with flexible AMOLED screens, and these two will be like "twin brothers," said Zhao Yong, general manager of Star Optoelectronics's Wuhan arm and vice president of TCL.

Star Optoelectronics expects the total number of its small and medium-sized display shipments to increase by nearly three times from this year to 2023, and those of foldable AMOLED panels to go up by 32 times, Zhao added.
